A peripheral is a device attached to a host computer but not part of it whose primary functionality is dependent upon the host, and can therefore be considered as expanding the host's capabilities, while not forming part of the system's core architecture.

Examples are printers, scanners, tape drives, microphones, speakers, webcams, and cameras.

Overview

Whether something is a peripheral or part of a computer is not always clearly demarcated; a video capture card inside a computer case is not part of the core computer but is contained in the case. However, whether something can be considered a peripheral or not is a trivial matter of nomenclature, and is not a significant issue.

What happen if my peripherals exceed my power supply limit, but still able to use it?
Q. I installed a graphic card recently and it requires about 500watts but my power supply maximum output is only 300watts!!! And guess what? I'm still able to use my computer normally and play games... this is weird, can anyone tell me what's going on and what will happen in the future?

A. When a graphics card says it requires 500 watts, they are assuming the system as a whole will require 500 watts to take, also wattage doesn't mean a ton for computer power supplies. Often amperage over the 12 volt rail(s) means much more as to what your power supply can handle. If you have played games with it already under heavy load (open up task manager and check cpu usage), you shouldn't have to worry too much about it exceeding power requirements. Also, does your graphics card require a 6 pin pci-express connector, and does your powersupply have one. If you graphics card doesn't need one of those connectors, then it doesn't likely require a large amount of power, only a small amount which it takes through the bus. Go to and… [cont.]

A. You would not need any other hardware as long as the connection is unsecured. If the connection is encrypted by either WEP or WPA you wil not be able to access the connection.

Which mic could I buy that is reasonable quality and compatible with a PC and needs no other peripherals?
Q. I would like to buy a mic (for singing and recording keyboard purposes) but I am on a strict budeget therefore I do not want to spend over 30 overall. If anyone could suggest anything that fits these specifications then I would be very grateful. I do not know a lot about technology and such so please do not suggest anything which may be too complicated. Thank you very much.

A. Here you go, a complete kit including a stand, cable and cases for under 30: Peavey MSP-1 Mic/Stand/Lead Pack There are two versions: One comes with XLR to XLR plugs and another version comes with an XLR to 1/4" plug cable. make sure you specify that you want the xlr to 1/4" version. All else you would need is a 3.5mm Mono Plug to 1/4 Mono Socket Adaptor: ( 1.39) This is so you can plug it into your computer's sound card's 3.5mm microphone socket/input. -=Alternatively=- An even easier option would be for you to buy a USB microphone. Unfortunately, you will only be able to use these on a computer only. Also make sure you have a free USB socket on your computer! You could opt for one of these cheap USB microphones. I don't… [cont.]
